Our history

Since it was opened in 1840, the Blancafort Spa has been a place of prestige that was visited by important figures of Barcelona society. Eugeni d'Ors architect of the Catalan novecentismo, was inspired by its gardens to write l'Oceanografia del tedi in 1916.

The mild climate, its excellent, unique mineral-medicinal waters, the rich natural environment and the opening in 1875 of the railway all gave impetus to La Garriga as a tourist resort and prestigious residential area, and were determining factors in the design of numerous residential houses of remarkable architectural interest, among which stand the Raspall block, which was declared to be a property of national interest. Throughout its entire history, this spectacular development maintained the spa closely linked to the upper echelons of Catalan bourgeois society as well as to the town of La Garriga and its inhabitants.

Mr Vicente Muñoz-Pomer, an acknowledged Spanish businessman and the president of the Grupo VMP, took the initiative in 2002 of remodelling this health resort and returning to it the central role it had enjoyed for over 150 years, of opening its doors once again in early 2005 as the Gran Hotel Balneario Blancafort, with the intention of reconverting it into a major reference in European spas.

Respecting its old, charismatic interior façade, the Gran Hotel Balneario Blancafort now has modern spaces as well as the most innovating facilities and services that are appropriate to a luxury hotel.
